Call for Applications from Strategic International Cooperative Program
January 2011
Japan Science and Technology Agency
Beijing Office
The Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), is an independent administrative organization, which operates “Strategic International Cooperative Program” to promote international cooperation among researchers. In China, JST has been supporting research cooperation between Japan and China, together with the National Natural Science Fund of China (NSFC) starting in fiscal 2004, and with the Chinese Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) starting in fiscal 2007. In fiscal 2011, we are soliciting topics for cooperative research between Japanese and Chinese researchers in the following fields.
◎ Fiscal 2011 call for topics for cooperative research between Japan and China (NSFC)
In order to strategically promote cooperation in international science and technology on important topics, based on agreements between these national governments, JST has been forming partnerships for joint research and holding research conferences in an organic fashion, with the purpose of planning growth in international research cooperation.
JST has been carrying out cooperation with NSFC in response to a directive from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology to develop “Science and Technology for Environment Conservation and Construction of a Society with Less Environmental Burden”, and to carry out research exchanges between the two countries since 2004. Continuing research in this environmental field, in fiscal 2011 the JST is calling for proposals on specific research plans for the recycling of waste products and waste heat for energy, specifically dealing with
① Technology for clean fuel production and energy exchanges using waste materials such as waste biomass
② Technology for the optimization of energy generation methods using waste heat and the integration of such methods into systems.
Companies are also welcome to make proposals.
In cooperation with NSFC, JST plans to support joint research (including the dispatch and invitation of Japanese and Chinese researchers and the holding of symposiums and seminars).
We request that applications be made by Japanese researchers to the JST, and by Chinese researchers to the NSFC. (Please note that if applications are not made to both, the application will not be considered.)
Period for applications
From January 4 (Tues.), 2011 to 5:00 PM, April 20 (Wed.)March 18 (Fri.), 2011

◎Fiscal 2011 Call for Topics for Cooperative Research between Japan and China (MOST)
Together with MOST, in fiscal 2011 JST is calling for proposals for specific research topics in the field of climate change, continuing the call from last year, and starting this year in the field of earthquake damage prevention.
We are calling for proposals for specific research topics. In the field of climate change, these should address one of the following:
① Measurement/prediction
② Technology to stop climate change (new techniques for reducing emissions of greenhouse gases, increasing absorption of these gases, conserving energy, etc.)
③ Research into coping with climate change (agriculture at high temperatures or with low precipitation, dealing with increased biomass, etc.)
In the field of earthquake damage prevention, specific proposals should address one of the following:
① Research into measurement/prediction (long term evaluation, crust movement prediction, tectonics studies, etc.)
② Technology to make buildings resistant to earthquakes (research into seismic responses of buildings etc., earthquake resistance evaluation, etc.)
③ Earthquake damage reduction research (research into risk evaluation, etc.)
Companies are also welcome to make these proposals.
In cooperation with MOST, JST plans to support joint research (including the dispatch and invitation of Japanese and Chinese researchers and the holding of symposiums and seminars).
We request that applications be made by Japanese researchers to JST, and by Chinese researchers to MOST. (Please note that if applications are not made respectively, applications will not be considered.)
Period for applications
From January 20 (Thur.), 2011 to 5:00 PM, May 9 (Mon.)March 22 (Tues.), 2011
